Sometimes the challenge that we have in applications is to get service conductors from one location to another and that shortest distance is through a structure. This section of the Code mandates that we cannot take a service through one structure to supply another structure. An example that I am aware of with regard to this topic was a location that I was involved with where the electrical contractor took service conductors through an attic to supply a structure on the other side of the building. This was a multi-family application and because the shortest distance was through a structure it seems to be a very economical solution. In this case the electrical inspector flagged the application and the contractor had to find another solution.
Section 230.3 does not permit service conductors to supply a building or other structure passing through the interior of another building or structure.
This begs the question as to what is considered outside of a structure or rather what is considered as passing through a structure. In hopes to resolve this question, section 230.6 brings some light to the subject.
In my opinion, this section is one that tells us that we need to pay close attention to the layout of our projects. We have to consider how we meet the needs of the overall project.
